God wants to speak to you! I think it’s really hard to accept that. It’s even more difficult to try to listen. We often can try to discern God’s movements in so many parts of our lives. It can be frustrating! We want to hear the voice of God! We know that we are so weak and human; it can be very hard to know we are hearing Him speak to us. We make things complicated!
God wants us to hear His voice, which is why He inspired the Church to bring together the inspired writings of many apostles and give us a clear way to hear His voice: through scripture! St. Augustine says, “When you read the Bible, God speaks to you; when you pray you speak to God”. How often do we go to Mass and listen to the readings as if God were speaking them directly to us? I know for me I used to go to prayer and just speak to God about what was going on in my life, which was very good, but then I wouldn’t leave much room for God to speak to me! This is why the practice of Lectio Divina, or “divine reading”, or simply just praying with scripture, is super important for our lives: we need to hear the voice of God.
Why should I take St. Augustine’s word for it? Well at a time when he was contemplating taking a leap of faith in his own life, he heard a voice telling him to “take and read”, he searched near him and found St. Paul’s letter to the Romans which read, “put on the Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 13:11-14). After reading this he was given the grace to make the change needed in his life and take that leap.
This was not the first time St. Augustine had heard scripture. So what changed his heart that day? Well other than hearing this crazy voice, I like to think that he finally read scripture in a way that he knew something was being communicated to him. He read that passage from St. Paul as addressed to him! He heard God speak to him through scripture!
We may be in the same place as St. Augustine, wanting to hear the voice of God. I don’t know how many times I used to say, “Lord, I just need to hear your voice!” and I think God was always trying to respond to me by saying, “Take my word and read it”! You may in the same place right now, desiring to hear the voice of God, looking for a way He might be trying to say something to you, and so I would just encourage you to take up some scripture, read, and hear Him speak to you! Go pray scripture like a Saint!
